Google Flight has a cool feature on carbon emissions

Google Flight can check the best ticket prices. Not only that it can estimate your carbon emissions per seat. An example. Suppose you want to fly to Houston to Pittsburgh. What is the flight path the lowest emissions?

Google Flight carbon dioxide emissions flying from Houston to Pittsburgh. The cheapest return flight has the lowest emissions in this case.

From my observations, non-stop flights have lower emissions than flights with stops. The departing flight has 29% lower emissions than similar flights. How much carbon dioxide was produced? It depends on the seat you book. For Economy class the total is 132 kg. For Business class the total is 198 kg.

Economy class ticket is 132 kg of carbon emissions for one person
Business class ticket is 198 kg of carbon emissions for one person

Why is business class more? Less seats, same amount of fuel to move you, means more emissions. 198 kg of emissions is almost 435 lbs of emissions, which is the equivalent of burning 54 gallons of gasoline. Think about how far you can go on 54 gallons of gasoline at even a low 30 miles per gallon.

I was considering getting a travel card. The emissions from wanton traveling or traveling for work have made me re-consider.
