Pokémon: Obsidian Flames flames out

As we continue our analysis of the Scarlet & Violet era, we come to set #3 Obsidian Flames. Based on our analysis, the set flamed out, except for the popular Charizard Ex cards. Let’s take a deeper dive. The ETB box features Charmander in a great design. It’s odd, while playing Violet we didn’t know Charmander could be found on Paldea. Who knew? 😉

Original price on Pokémon Center for an Obsidian Flames booster box: 161.64 or $4.49 a pack. Booster boxes are available.

Current price on tcgplayer: 98.99 or $2.75 a pack

That’s a loss of 38.8% from the August 11th release. No good.

There are 230 cards in the set, smaller than Scarlet & Violet base and Paldea Evolved. 26 cards are valued above $3 on pricecharting.com. That’s a concentration value of 11.30% (26/230). That tells us what percentage of the set had any value. Obsidian Flames is highly concentrated.

The total value is calculated at $249.94, excluding commons, uncommons, and rares. If we look deeper, the top three Charizard cards are worth $130.25, concentrating 52.11% of the $3 and above value into 1.3% of the set. At a pack price of $2.75 each, you could theoretically collect the entire set in 92 packs.

Rank of Scarlet & Violet sets by value

This is how the league tables look like as of October 26th.

Scarlet & Violet 151: $1.038.60

Paldea Evolved: $742.22

Scarlet & Violet base: $361.29

Obsidian Flames: $249.94

That’s the order we would recommend packs if you are looking for valuable hits. Go with Obsidian Flames if you love Charmeleon, Charmander, and Charizard. Paldea Evolved seems like a better bet than base or Obsidian Flames. The packs are in the same range with a better chance of nice cards.

The bad and good about Obsidian Flames

  • This is a Charizard themed set, one of the most popular Pokemon characters
  • That focus on Charizard detracts from other cards
  • Which is a shame as the art is again great
  • If you pull Charizard, I bet it looks amazing in person
  • Poppy and Geeta full art trainers are valued at a low level, which is unusual (people didn’t like beating Poppy and Geeta???)
  • Production should be reduced by 2 to 3% easily for Paradox Rift from Obsidian Flame levels. We’ll find out next week!!!
  • I gripe about pack prices. There is a good chance all of these packs are gone by the holidays
  • What stinks for collectors is great for buyers
  • If you are looking to get an individual card or complete Obsidian Flames, the lower prices makes it much easier to obtain and get what you want
  • StockX has an ask price on two Obsidian Flame ETB’s at $68. Not bad at all.
  • We’ll continue focusing on 151 and Scarlet & Violet base.
