When we think of lettuce, we imagine the lettuce is grown in a field, transported to us, and sent to our local grocery store. We don’t think of lettuce as grown inside a vertical greenhouse, with reclaimed rainwater, locally grown, with minimal transportation. I was surprised to find out quite a few farms and companies grow lettuce in this manner.
Benefits of greenhouse lettuce
- Self-contained, clean, no harmful sprays and pesticides, automated
- Lower waste
- Consistent high quality food
- Consistent supplies
- More flavor, fresher taste and higher nutrients
- Locally grown, meaning food lasts longer
- 90% less water and less land needed for farming. Much of the water is recycled.
- Mirai says a plant factory system is 50 to 100 times production efficient as traditional farming
- Revol Greens is on track to save 880 million gallons of water a year
- Grown year round, 365 days a year
Some firms that produce greenhouse lettuce
- Mirai Group (Japan) Great video here of the vertical greenhouse in operation: https://vimeo.com/232915617
- Revol Greens (USA)
- Kalera (USA)
The world faces devastating wildfires, heat domes, and flash flooding due to climate pollution and excessive heat in the oceans and atmosphere. All this will drive up food costs and reduce the quantity of food grown. Indoor lettuce and vegetable farming have lots of benefits. We invite you to learn more about each of the firms above. If you see these brands or others advertising greenhouse lettuce, you can try it for yourself.
