Sprouts Farmers Market has more than 380 grocery stores across the US. As of May 1st, you can no longer get single-use plastic bags in their stores. You can bring your own or buy a reusable plastic bag that will last 125 trips. This single change will save 200 million single-use plastic bags a year. Plastic bags are sourced from fossil fuels. Way to go Sprouts! Now to tackle the other 100 billion single-use plastic bags we use annually.
Plastic bags are made from petroleum, which means plastic bags are one way we are depleting our oil supply. Plastic bags and petroleum are intrinsically linked. About 8% to 10% of our total oil supply goes to making plastic. It is estimated that about 12 million barrels of oil a year are used in making the plastic bags used in the US.
In total, the US throws away an estimated 100 billion plastic bags annually.
