Fusion energy has been talked about since the 1950’s. This is the process the Sun uses, compressing together 4 hydrogen atoms into 1 helium, with the extra mass being converted into radiation. Tomorrow, the Department of Energy will release results showing that about 20% more energy was released in a fusion experiment than was consumed. This would be a world first. Scientists will analyze the results, poke holes in it, and work to replicate it if true.

Many science fiction stories have been written on fusion. The impact fusion could have on sustainable, widespread, clean energy, on equalizing living standards, eliminating poverty, improving health can not be underestimated. We realize it will take decades to scale. As we see with wind and solar, we can use all the clean energy we can get. Our current economic system is based on scarcity: Scarcity of labor, scarcity of materials, scarcity of money. A world of abundance would create new economic theories, new paradigms how we live. That’s the world science fictions authors have written about.
